The Art of the Green Smoothie

I use this basic equation for all my green smoothies and just interchange the ingredients:

  • 1 cup liquid
  • 1 cup greens
  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup fruit

*Pro tip!* Put your greens and your liquid in the blender first and liquify them then add the fruit and and blend away this way there are no leafy chunks in your smoothie. Yuck!

I generally use a fresh banana and frozen fruit just because it’s easier and I like the consistency but feel free to use a frozen banana and fresh fruit or both frozen or both fresh and throw  in some ice. Just play around with it! Depending on your blender you may have to add extra liquid to get it to blend. Bananas help sweeten, if you are allergic or don't like them feel free to leave them out! It's really fun how many different ways you can make smoothies! Experiment!

Some liquids you can use:

  • Freshly squeezed juices
  • Almond milk
  • Coconut milk
  • Coconut water
  • Water

Greens you can use:

  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Romaine
  • Collard Greens
  • Bok Choy

Other things you can add:

  • Nut butters
  • Coconut oil
  • Protein powders
  • Cinnamon
  • Chia seeds
  • Flax seeds
  • Cacoa powder

If you are really interested in trying green smoothies and think you will hate them or you are kind of stuck in a rut with your smoothies I highly recommend you take a look at the recipes over at Simple Green Smoothies. They have so many fun and interesting concoctions. Doing one of the green smoothie challenges is fun too. Basically, you just drink one green smoothie a day. They will email you a grocery list and a bunch of different recipes to try out. If it's just you, you will have to cut the recipes in half but it's not that big of a deal. I had a lot of fun trying them all the last time I did it.

My all time favorite green smoothie is their Sunshine in a Jar recipe. I cut it in half and altered it a bit.

1 cup, fresh spinach
1 cup frozen pineapple
1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice

  3. Love those pics and a juicer is going to be my next splurge, love the idea of getting all your veggies in one sip :)

    Greetings from London,

  4. I've been wanting to try out some green smoothies! This is so helpful to have a "guide" of what to put in them :)
    Thanks for the tips!!!

  5. Yum, I'm actually a big fan of almond milk in my smoothies. Typically in lieu of a liquid I use a plain greek yogurt with a tiny splash of OJ!

    1. Sounds delicious! I think if I did this my blender wouldn't blend though lol it needs lots of liquid

    2. I love green smoothies!! I'm going to try some of your combos... Currently my favorite is banana, spinach, chobani coconut yogurt, and frozen pineapple. Need to switch it up!! (Ps- once I was out of spinach and kale and used broccoli as my green, not delicious!)

  6. I do spinach, banana, PB, and cocoa powder. Super tasty!

  7. Thank you for sharing this, I'm on a mission to be more healthier so this post came at the right time. You've made eating healthy look both effortless and interesting - thanks again for the much needed inspiration. The Sunshine In a Jar recipe looks and sounds especially amazing :)

  8. It is good to eat fruits and veggies raw for sure. I never made a smoothie before. I do not have them to often seem to hard on the digestion for me but may try it again. That site sounds pretty cool.

  9. My favorite green smoothie is more like a milk shake: 1 frozen banana, 1 cup of spinach, 1 tablespoon peanut butter, a spoonful of honey (dissolved with an equal part water for easier blending), and however much milk and ice you'd like for consistency! You don't taste the spinach at all and it's so tasty!

  14. Have you ever looked at the nutribullets? I loved adding green smoothies to my day before I had one, but they are seriously so worth the money if you use them. It takes about one minute to clean up after I'm done blending, it isn't bulky, and you can make one for just your portion!

    Love your blog!
